Ensure that tourists do not bypass Wales when they visit the UK
SUDIPTA DEV – Mumbai
Carwyn Jones, First Minister of Wales, was in India recently to encourage stronger business links, strengthen education ties and promote Wales as a tourism destination. The Welsh Government is very focused on attracting Indian tourists visiting the UK and Europe. It is a known fact that most Indians going to the UK, visit different locations in England and Scotland, completely bypassing Wales. The Government of Wales intends to change that. “India is a huge market. We want to make sure that when Indian tourists come to the UK they do not just see England and Scotland but also include Wales in their itinerary,” said Jones.
Visit Wales will be working out a strategy for the India market. “A good place to start will be a Bollywood film, and we are looking at that closely,” said Jones, adding that India is important to Wales because of the Indian investment there, in particularly by the Tatas.
Wales is closer to London than Scotland. The capital city Cardiff is about two hours by train from London, and about two-and-a-half hours by car. “After a few hectic days in London, Wales is a perfect destination for a relaxing holiday. Wales has more castles per square mile than anywhere else in the world. It has a rich history, and also a different language and different culture to England,” stated Jones.
As a destination Wales is not just a lot cheaper than London, but also Scotland. Jones however asserted that Wales does not sell itself as a cheap destination but one that offers good service, good facilities, and good value for money. “What we offer is a combination to suit any budget, any pocket – from backpackers to high end holiday makers. We want to make sure that in the next few months and years people in India understand what Wales has to offer as a destination,” said Jones, mentioning that he has also met tourism operators during his trip.
For those who prefer activity based holidays there is a great variety of things to do. Some of the popular activities for tourists are fishing, walking, mountain biking, etc. Events that can attract Indian tourists are – the biggest folk festival in Europe that takes place in Wales, there is an international version as well that is multi-lingual. While rugby as a sport attracts most attention in Wales, the country has hosted test cricket too. Then there is the Hay Literary Festival, which is an annual event. Next year Cardiff will be hosting World Music Expo (WOMEX).
Mostly Indians who go to Wales are there to visit family. The Indian community in Wales comprises of largely professional people.
