Baghbazar Sarbojanin Durgotsav & Exhibition
Baghbazar is one of the oldest Durga Puja pandals in Kolkata, in existence for around 100 years. The history of Baghbazar Sarbojanin Durgotsav & Exhibition is an inseparable part of the history and progress of Bengali culture. In 1919, for the first time, Puja was organised by people communally and not inside a Zamindar’s home. It was celebrated by the people of Bagbazar at the home of the Sarkars, on Baghbazar Street at the junction of Nebubagan Lane and Bagbazar Street where it had been held privately by the Sarkars for years before, until they couldn’t afford to organise it any more. In 1926 with the efforts of the renowned social worker Nagendra Nath Ghoshal it took the shape of a proper organisation. For the required space to organise the exhibition, Durgacharan Bandyopadhyay president of the organisation selected the place known as Metal-Yard formerly, used by the Calcutta Corporation’s road-repair department. He requested the then Mayor of Calcutta, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose for the due permission. Bose approved his request and agreed for a historical joint exhibition by Baghbazar Sarbojanin Durgotsav & Exhibition and the Corporation. He also donated five hundred rupees to this organisation!
