Reykjavík, the world’s northernmost capital has a vibrant cultural and design scene and is considered as one of the greenest and safest cities in the world. The UNESCO City of Literature was initially founded in 1786 as a trading town and visitors can take a look at the town’s history from its Settlement Exhibition which is built around the unearthed Viking longhouse of the area’s earliest inhabitants. Icelandic National Day is celebrated around this time to coincide with the birthday of Jon Sigurosson, the leader of the 20th century Icelandic Independence Movement through National Day parades to street performances and concerts set up by the Icelandic Circus.
