Oudtshoorn, South Africa
Oudtshoorn, the largest town in the Klein Karoo area in the Western Cape, South Africa, is known as the ostrich capital of the world. Two ostrich-feather booms, during 1865-1870 and 1900-1914, truly established the settlement. The town’s economy is primarily reliant on the ostrich farming and tourism industries. Oudtshoorn is home to the world’s largest ostrich population, with a number of specialised ostrich breeding farms which have ostrich tours where visitors can interact with the magnificent birds. Another must visit destination is the Cango Caves, a series of limestone chambers set in Precambrian (a time about 4500 million years ago) age. Cango Caves is the only show cave in Africa which offers a choice of Heritage (easy) or Adventure Tours with accredited tour guides.
