Ooty, Tamil Nadu
Ooty, also known as Udhagamandalam, is a hill station in the state of Tamil Nadu, in southern India. Central Ooty Lake is a huge artificial expanse of water surrounded by trees. On the slopes of nearby Elk Hill, the Rose Garden is home to over 2,000 varieties of roses. The Government Botanical Garden, created in the 19th century, is spread over 55 acres of land and is home to exotic ferns, orchids and even a prehistoric fossilised tree believed to be around 20 million years old. The flower show conducted here as part of the Ooty Summer Festival is a major attraction. Located at an altitude of 2623 meters, Doddabetta Peak is the highest peak in the Nilgiris. The song Chaiyya Chaiyya filmed on Shah Rukh Khan in the movie Dil Se was shot on the rooftop of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway train. This UNESCO World Heritage train connects Ooty to Mettupalayam, the nearest railhead.
