Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is the third-largest city in Germany. Over a length of 13.7 km, the Isar river winds its way through the city and offers recreational activities on its banks. Munich is as well known for its cosmopolitan culture as its fascinating heritage. The Altstadt (Old Town) is the heart of Munich; it includes Marienplatz, the Frauenkirche and the pedestrian area. The city is the hub of cultural activities with 47 theatres and 46 museums. There are also countless cafés, bars and restaurants. Oktoberfest, the world’s largest beer festival and travelling funfair, is held annually in Munich, attracting millions of tourists from around the world.
