Mombasa, the second largest city of Kenya and a port town, is an island connected to the mainland by bridges and ferries. The town overlooks a wide harbour, where commercial shipping is accompanied by traditional sailing dhows. Mombasa’s old town, among the narrow winding streets and Arab architecture, is popular among tourists. Whereas, Fort Jesus carries historical significance through its association with the Portuguese army and Shirazi Arabs. Modern Mombasa is a city of diversity. Other renowned tourist attractions in and around Mombasa include Mombasa Town Hall, Nyali Beach, Diani Beach among others.
