Madrid
Madrid, the capital of Spain, is a cosmopolitan city featuring modern infrastructure, cultural and artistic heritage, and history. Located in the geographic centre of the Iberian Peninsula at an altitude of 646 m, Madrid has one of the most important historic centres of all the great European cities. The historic centre, also known as the “Madrid of Los Austrias” and the Plaza Mayor square – inaugurated in 1620 and one of the most popular sites in Spain – are examples of the city in the 16th and 17th centuries. Madrid has over 60 museums such as the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Reina Sofía National Art Centre. Madrid’s nightlife is another attraction, due to its bars, pubs, clubs and flamenco halls. Other daytime entertainment options include traditional outdoor dances, popular festivities and the San Isidro bullfighting festival.
