Dunedin
Known as ‘the Edinburgh of the south’, Dunedin is Otago region’s largest city in New Zealand. Its grand, ruler-straight Edwardian and Victorian streetscapes are a legacy of the Central Otago gold boom. The ruggedly beautiful, sparsely populated Central Otago region is a favourite of artists, orchardists and red grape winemakers. Take a road trip to discover its big skies and haunted country pubs, or head to the ski towns of Queenstown and Wanaka in the Southern Alps. It’s an eco-tourist’s dream destination with the world’s only mainland albatross colony, the world’s rarest penguin – the hoiho, wild sea lions and even the occasional leopard and elephant seal. The rare charms of Otago Peninsula also extend to Larnach Castle, built in 1871.
