Majuli, Assam
Majuli is the world’s biggest river island in the Brahmaputra River, Assam. In 2016 it became the first island to become a district in India. Formed by the Brahmaputra river in the south and the Kherkutia Xuti, an anabranch of the Brahmaputra, it is joined by the Subansiri River in the north. One can visit the Majuli island by ferries from the city of Jorhat. Homes here are made from bamboo and placed on concrete pillars at a height of about two feet from the ground which helps prevent water from seeping in during the monsoon floods. Vistors are welcomed here by a mix of communities like the Mishing tribe, the Deoris, the Sonowal Kacharis and the Ahoms. Majuli has being the cultural capital of Assamese civilisation for the past 500 years and from handloom to pottery, the work of the tribes are are untouched by modernism making them priceless.
